Personality: If you caught Kiriwar when he wasn’t working, he would seem like a lazy middle-aged man. However, one scent of blood is all it takes to drive him insane. Kiriwar suffers from antisocial personality disorder as well as severe blood-related paraphilia. He is a psychopath with no regard for human life. He sees all humans, including himself, as trash, not worthy of happiness. He has no ability to feel anything other than hatred and anger for those around him and possesses no capacity for love or affection. He gets openly irritated by people and tries to piss people off on purpose so they will attack him and he can find a reason to fight. His laziness is simply just him not caring enough to try and make life better for anyone.
He does possess an extreme fondness for blood. The sight of blood, the taste of blood, the smell of blood or even the promise of blood is all it takes to turn Kiriwar into a killing machine. Kiriwar is extremely violent. He likes breaking people and by that I mean that he likes breaking their bodies and also their spirits. The smell, sight, taste, promise of blood doesn’t just drive Kiriwar into a killing spree it also excites him on a sexual level. Kiriwar will attack his victims and sexually abuse them before they die (and… admittedly sometimes after), especially if they are men. There’s someone that to him is much more exciting about attacking a man that way, mainly because they are considered the ‘stronger’ sex. In fact, Kiriwar has little to no interaction with women, especially strong women. The point is though that Kiriwar gets carried away by the power and the rush of hurting someone so badly that they pour out blood, so badly that they die, and this rush and excitement gets transferred into sexual desire. He’s a sadist in that sense.
All that being said, Kiriwar is still a lazy old man at least most of the time. He even speaks slowly most of the time, drawing out sounds and words as if he hardly cares to say them. He won’t do anything that causes a bigger mess than he can clean up. He doesn’t attack the people considered his ‘bosses’ for instance, because fixing that mess would be a hassle. He doesn’t mind attacking people who might be stronger than him when he’s in his frenzied state, but other than that he’s more of the type to try and sit down and enjoy a beer (if he can find one, that is). His interaction with people is still extremely limited though, as he lacks any sort of manners or tact. He is extremely vulgar. He uses cuss words freely and frequently. He won’t hesitate to verbally abuse someone.
He’s not extremely educated in a scholarly sense, seeing as formal school wasn’t really an option for him, but he is well versed in the art of surviving, especially if he has to use someone to do so. He does have random bits of information shoved up in his head that he’s forgotten how it got there or that he overheard somewhere, but for the most part reading, math and writing are not his strong points. They even frustrate him greatly because he doesn’t really understand them. When Kiriwar gets frustrated he gets violent, which isn’t a good thing.
Kiriwar also doesn’t bother with strategy, usually going for the ‘keep swinging and beat the shit out of them until they stop moving’ approach to fighting. He can follow directions though and will if he’s previously decided that following them will be easier than not following them. He doesn’t usually attack people he can tell are stronger than him, but he is interested in seeing if someone can actually beat him. The Punishers are not actively sought out by contestants of Igura, and for good reason. (If you are confused I’ll explain this better in History section). He will openly attack people he’s not sure are stronger than him, just to see who will win. Once he finds out they can beat him though, he won’t actively seek to fight them again simply due to laziness.
Kiriwar’s biggest headache in life is Gunzi, the partner in his work. He hates Gunzi more than he hates anyone else in the world and would like nothing better than to kill the brat, however doing that would mean that he would slip more into his insanity and he prefers to keep some kind of his wits about him. The other Punisher can work Kiriwar into intense anger extremely quickly. (More on Kiriwar’s relationship with Gunzi in Weaknesses and History section)
Kiriwar might be more than a little crazy but when he isn’t frenzied he does have a pretty good grasp on reality. Basically, while at first he will be extremely pissed over the situation that the game will put him in (being dragged from home and The Game, monitored every moment, unable to work out his frustrations and twisted desires) there will come a time when he will grow more complacent, though his complacency will have a hint of sinisterness to it. He will be waiting for his chance to strike and find a way back home. Despite this, he’s spent his life being trained and manipulated into working for others, as long as he’s given a chance to work out some of his frustration, he won’t find it too difficult to eventually integrate into the new society.
However, Kiriwar’s job as a Punisher of Igura (more on that in History) consumes his thoughts; the job gives him a purpose as well as a place to act on his horrible impulses. He will not appreciate being taken from it and despite how interesting war can be; he will always miss the game and want to go back. He enjoys fighting and hurting people as hobby and profession; it’s not something he will be able to simply stop thinking about.
Abilities/Strengths: Kiriwar doesn’t have any ‘magical’ abilities. He has never seen ‘magic’ and doesn’t believe that it exists. He has gone through some pretty intense training since he was young, though, and that has given him above average strength, endurance for pain, and speed. He’s not freaky fast or anything, but he’s fast enough to use a pipe as his main weapon. He can go a long time without sleep or food and has learned to survive off of just what he can find on the street. He’s extremely street-smart just as he isn’t book smart. He also has the ability to ‘sense’ when people are much stronger than him or above him in station (i.e. “it would be a hassle to fight them so DON’T”) not in any sort of empathetic/magical sense but just in a sort of ‘fighter’s vibe’ deal. Kiriwar is also extremely handy with his weapon and can face a variety of styles with just his pipe in hands and yet somehow survive. Kiriwar also has the ability to deal with extremely stressful situations very quickly. He can spend time with the completely insane and not go more mad himself, though he will get a headache.
Weapons: His weapon of choice is a long metal pipe that ends in a U-Bend with dog tags hanging from it that are printed with faces of playing cards (more on this in History). On his person he also carries a military issue knife. He prefers blunt objects to sharp ones though, as the kill is more satisfying to him then. He can swordfight in the traditional sense as well, though he doesn’t like the feel of blades that long. If faced by an enemy with a sword he usually uses his pipe as his weapon, which has survived attacks from katana and other types of swords. He also has pretty good aim with a gun, though long-distance kills really don’t suit him. He always feels unfulfilled if he isn’t looking directly into his victims’ face when they die.
Weaknesses: Kiriwar’s fighting style focuses on brute strength and brutal attacks, leaving his defense extremely low. If someone was fast enough they could get in some pretty nasty blows. When Kiriwar also gets into a completely frenzied state he doesn’t think AT ALL and while this does make his strength and speed go up it makes any thought of defense he might have had go down. Usually he just keeps his attacks up so that it’s hard to get a blow in, but he doesn’t actually think to shield himself from counter attacks other than by using his pipe as a block. It is not a balanced style of fighting.
Another major weakness is Gunzi. As I stated, he hates Gunzi more than anything, but he is also used to the brat being around. Gunzi is a balance for Kiriwar. His insanity helps keep Kiriwar more sane (as much as he can be). Without Gunzi, he’s more likely to go more into a mad frenzy of a desire to kill and rape and torture and break. Gunzi helps him keep his ‘lazy old man’ persona by giving him something to focus on, even if it is overwhelming intense hatred. If Gunzi is taken away from him Kiriwar loses his slipping grip on reality. This can be a major weakness because then he’ll lose even more thoughts of defense during a fight. Despite this weakness Kiriwar and Gunzi are in NO WAY a ‘couple’ nor is Kiriwar a ‘fatherly’ figure for Gunzi. He HATES Gunzi and wants nothing more than to kill the fucking brat. He just usually finds that he can’t but it’s not out of some hidden sense of affection, merely a need to survive.
Kiriwar also has to be wary of blood, as (as stated) it will drive him nuts. He can keep control when it’s just a little bit but a lot of blood equals a lot of crazy.
History: NOTE: Kiriwar is mostly a ‘background’ character in the actual game of TnC. I like to call him a ‘Game Over character’. If he catches you, then he attacks you, sexually abuses you, and kills you then it’s ‘Game Over’. Because of this, most of the history written here is speculative on my part but based on what he does and says in the game and a lot of the extra bits that have been produced by the creators of the game. I would still consider him OU but I needed to fill in the blanks of his past a bit to play him better. Also keep in mind that that is why a lot of it is pretty vague, as it is also done from the perspective of Kiriwar. In the end, history means little to nothing to Kiriwar, the present and The Game are all that matter.
Years before Kiriwar was born the apocalypse happened. Massive nuclear and chemical warfare spread throughout the world and made most of it completely uninhabitable. Humanity survived, barely, simply by force of will. Japan, along with the rest of the world, was brought to complete ruin. It’s once glorious cities of life and light became nothing more than piles of rubble and broken down buildings. There was utter chaos as people tried to piece back together some form of their lives. It was during the time of the confusion of post-war that Kiriwar was born.
He never knew his family. It might have been because they died or it might have been that they sold him for food or money or the drugs that people used to survive the pain that had become their lives. In truth, Kiriwar doesn’t care what happened to them because they mean nothing to him. Somehow he found himself in what used to be Tokyo, the capital of Japan, and what soon was renamed Toshima. As the rest of the world started to regain some form of infrastructure, Toshima became a place where criminals ruled and the worst in humanity reared its ugly head. What was done to Kiriwar as he grew up was purely to test the limits of a human mind and body; eventually it drove all emotion (minus the more negative ones of anger and brutal sexual desire) from him. He started the ‘training’ at an extremely young age, so young that he doesn’t remember a time when it was not there. It was training to hunt and kill, to be a mindless solider in a sense. The problem was that the side effects were extreme. He would follow orders and kill who he was told to, but the bodies would always be completely brutalized. There are spots in Kiriwar’s memory that are completely gone; blank or rushed images that make no sense. It’s these spots of messed up memory that made Kiriwar believe that the past is utterly useless.
There is not a time that he remembers not knowing Gunzi, but he knows there must have been because he is older than Gunzi by a handful a years. The brat was simply there, fucked up in the head and a hassle to deal with. He was ‘given’ to Kiriwar to kill but for some reason Kiriwar kept him around. He would fuck the kid up pretty badly, but he kept him despite how broken he was and how much Kiriwar hated everything about him. He also doesn’t remember a time without Arbitro (his ‘boss’), but the pervert must have come in at some time because he can’t have been there the whole time. The problem is that Kiriwar doesn’t remember who originally taught him what he knows and made him into what he is so in his head Arbitro is his creator and his boss and the referee that he answers too, as far as Kiriwar can tell anyway.
He does remember The Game though. He remembers every bit about The Game.
The Game. Igura.
There came a point when the crime organizations were taken over by a single man known only as Il-Re. The problem was that his authority was constantly challenged and it threatened to overthrow any stability that Toshima had gained in the years after the war. He eventually created a game and gave people an opportunity to challenge him… if only they could survive and win. The game seems simple enough. Once you join you are given special dog tags that are printed with the faces of playing cards (two of hearts, queen of diamonds, ten of spades, jack of clubs, etc.). Every ‘contestant’ in this game starts out with their own dog tags. If you can collect certain combinations of the cards (such as a royal straight flush) then you can proceed to face Il-Re. If you can beat him then riches and power belong to you. No one has ever gotten that far in all the years the game has been played.
There are, of course, a few rules to this game, as every proper game has rules. You have to be invited into the game to play it. Once you agree to play you cannot stop. You can’t kill any of the other contestants. You can’t make fake dog tags to try and cheat your way into the show down with Il-Re (in fact the ‘real’ dog tags are imbedded with a scent so that Arbitro’s favorite ‘pet’, a boy named Inu who has the ability to smell the difference between the real ones and fake ones, can sniff you out if you try and break this rule). They are simple rules that everyone eventually breaks. When you’ve broken a rule then the Punishers can come after you. Kiriwar and Gunzi were the ones picked to be the Punishers. This made Gunzi an even more constant presence in Kiriwar’s life as now they were partners in work (in the BL game and the manga based on it the two are rarely seen alone). This job suited Kiriwar just fine. He had no interest in facing Il-Re and gaining power for himself, but in a game where everyone breaks the rules everyone is up to be Punished and therefore everyone has an equal chance of being his new victim.
This position gained Kiriwar a fearsome reputation for attacking even if he isn’t sure which rule (if any) that his victim has broken. In general people learn pretty quickly to stay out of the Punishers’ way or else they end up dead and worse.
